Foodbank
Why A Foodbank?
The need for food provision is at an all-time high as we continue to grapple our way through the current pandemic and we are passionate about meeting that need in this area and beyond. Our aim in not to just plug a whole for the short term but to work long term on the deeper issues that lead to people needing to rely on Foodbanks. A recent study by the Government (Indices of Deprivation Study) has revealed that a couple of areas within Hollingdean are in the bottom 10% of most deprived areas in the UK even without the current crises we find ourselves in.
Our Vision
We are very pleased to announce that last week we have become a Trussell Trust Foodbank partner. Of the 2000 foodbanks currently operating in the UK, 60% are Trussell Trust Partners. Their vision of a future without a need for Foodbanks, matches our own and keeps us accountable to working at a deeper level than just simply providing food. Their credibility also gives our Foodbank greater credibility enabling us to run highly stringent and professional project. We are absolutely passionate about this project and committed to make this work but it will take all of us in the St Matthias community and beyond if we are to pull it off. So, we are very grateful for your interest
How To Help
PRAYER
The first way for everyone to help is to be praying... It will be the most effective thing we can do to get the Foodbank off the ground. This is not just a practical battle it is deeply spiritual.
COLLECT FOOD
We are collecting the following key food items:
- Veg Curry
- Meat curry
- canned potatoes
- tinned veg - peas, carrots etc
- tinned sweetcorn
- Rice
- fruit juice
- mayonnaise
- coffee
- decaf tea
- washing up liquid
- laundry powder/liquid
- soap/shower gel/shampoo/conditioner
- toothbrushes
There are two ways to collect.
1) Become a Collection Hub
We would love you to become a Collection Hub for the Foodbank and collect key items of food. Are you able to promote the Foodbank to neighbours and friends in your area through WhatsApp and social media who can then come and drop off their collections to you?
2) Donate Food
Alternatively, simply donate food directly to the Foodbank either through one of the collection hubs or in the collection bins at St Matthias Church.

SERVE
There are a number of ways to serve.
1) Join Our Monday Foodbank Team
We would love you to become part of the team receiving deliveries, picking orders, welcoming guests into the Foodbank and making deliveries to local residents that can't get out. The Foodbank will be operational on Mondays. All volunteers will be required to undergo training and a recruitment process and you can start that now.
2) Help Us Prepare The Foodbank
As of the 1st December we will be moving forward in readying St Richards to process food donations, store food and make the building as welcoming as we can. If you are free to help and gifted in DIY, cleaning and organising we would love some help setting up.
